Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary:
Situated on the banks of the artificial Periyar lake, it is Indias largest wildlife sanctuary . Spread over an area of over 777 Sq km and surrounded by the lake with an area of over 25 Sq Km this is indeed an ideal sanctuary for the wild. The vegetation here consists mostly of deciduous forest and savannah grass lands and here roams herds of wild elephants, tigers, nilgiri langurs and so on.
Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary:
Idukki wild life Sanctuary is a land-locked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas of Kerala. Situated at an altitude of 450-748 mt above sea level, this sanctuary occupies the forest land between the Cheruthoni river and the Periyar river. The Idukki arch dam, the first major hydroelectric project in Kerala, is situated here. The Idukki reservoir - is formed by the three dams Cheruthoni, Idukki and Kulamavu. A lake surrounds the sanctuary and the greenery comprises of tropical evergreen and deciduous trees. The boat rides are the main attraction here.
SilentValley National Park :
Silent Valley National Park (89.52 km²) is located in the Nilgiri Hills, Palakkad district, Kerala, SilentValleyNational Park has a very eventful history in comparison to the other wildlife parks in the country. The local name for the park is Sairandhrivanam (the forest in the valley) and is renowned for its unique rainforest. The Silent Valley National Park is the sole cause of rainfall in Kerala; during the summer season you would notice a wide range of peninsular mammals, hundreds of different species of butterflies, and also multiple varieties of rare birds. Often during the winters, Migratory birds come here. They are the most unique specimens and are indeed a pleasure to the eyes.
