Vythiri
Vythiri, a land blessed abundantly by nature, is one of the most popular tourist haunts of Kerala. The land, situated 3000 m above MSL, is famous for its numerous spice plantations dotting the landscape. The salubrious climate and scenic beauty of Vythiri made it a popular hill-retreat during the colonial times.

Rocky terrains, lush forests, numerous waterfalls and wild streams make Vythiri an ideal destination for adventure travelers. There are numerous opportunities here for trekking, rafting, wildlife adventure safari etc. Wayanad wildlife sanctuary, a part of the Nilgiri biosphere reserve, is located near Vythiri. For Ornithologists, Vythiri is a heaven – ideal for spotting an exciting array of exotic birds. Apart from this, the land is blessed with a pleasant climate, lush greenery, and several lakes and waterfalls scattered across the region
How to get there ?
By Air
The nearest airport is situated at Kozhikode at a distance of around 90 km away from Vythiri.

By Road
Vythiri is well connected by a network of roads to the rest of the state and to the neighboring state of Karnataka.

By Rail
Kozhikode railway station, located at a distance of 68 km, is the nearest railway station.
Roam around
To traverse the hilly terrain of Vythiri it is best to hire a jeep. Taxis are also a viable option to move around. For covering small distances we recommend casual ramble, as it might yield some surprising results.
Hotspots
Pookot Lake:- Pookot Lake is a fresh water Lake located in the evergreen forests near Vythiri. The beauty of the lake, reflecting the lush green canopy of the mountains, is further accentuated by the surrounding meadows. The lake, situated at an altitude of 2000 m above MSL, offers a variety of options to unwind and relax; boat-rides being the perfect way to enjoy the scenic beauty of the region. The place has an aquarium, children’s park and a small emporium selling handicrafts and spices.

Chembra Peak:- Chembra peak, a vantage point located at an altitude of 2100 m above MSL, offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. The peak forms a part of the Western Ghats mountain range, lying in close proximity to the Nilgiri Hills and Vellarimala. The peak is an ideal spot for trekking; the District Tourism Promotion Council arranges guides and necessary equipments on hiring basis.

Chain Tree:- According to tribal legends, the area surrounding this tree was once haunted by the specter of a tribal youth. During the times of the British Raj, this youth showed a British engineer a difficult trail to enter Wayanad through the mountainous terrains. The Brit, eager to take credit of the discovery, killed the youth. The restless spirit of the youth started haunting the region to avenge his death until it was finally chained to this tree.

Soojipara Falls:- Soojipara waterfalls cascades down the rocky slopes in an awe-inspiring grandeur. Water tumbles down the rocky precipice in three tiers, creating a spectacular display. The waterfall is remotely located inside the dense woods, and is accessible only by a 2 km long trek through the forests. Have fun and enjoy by taking a dip in the pool down the cascade or just frolicking in the spray. The pool below the cascade offers scope for water-rafting and other water-sports.

Meenmutty Falls:-
This perennial waterfall cascades down a slope of 300 meters in three stages. Meenmutty is the highest and the most captivating of all the waterfalls in Wayanad. The waterfall offers an unmatched visual spectacle - a mélange of silver cascades and mist contrasted against the black rocks and surrounding greenery. The strenuous climb to the summit of the falls is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Edakkal Caves:- Edakkal Caves is famous for its 5000 year old fascinating ancient rock etchings and drawings. A place of immense archeological interest, the cave is frequented by archeologists, historians and tourists alike. There are various scenes of hunting depicted on the walls of the two main chambers. Watch your head as sections of the cave are short with height falling below 5 ft.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary:- Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary, situated around 100 km from Vythiri, is a safe refuge for a variety of rare animals. The sanctuary lies within the Nilgiri biosphere, in close proximity to Bandhipur, Nagarhole and Mudumalai wildlife sanctuaries. A variety of animals including the bison, spotted deer, tiger, leopard, bear, wild boar and elephant can be spotted in the sanctuary.

The Ambalavayal Heritage Museum:- The museum houses a variety of tribal artifacts including stone weaponry, clay sculptures and hunting equipments dating back to the 2nd century AD. These artifacts bear evidence to the existence of an early advanced civilization in the mountainous terrains of Wayanad. The museum attracts archeologists, historians and travelers alike.

Boating in Pookot Lake:- Pookot Lake is an ideal spot to enjoy a soothing boat ride; enjoying the beauty of the surrounding greenery. The main attraction here is fishing the spot offers immense scope for catching fish.

Trekking:- Being surrounded by various mountains and hilly terrain, Vythiri offers a lot of scope for trekking. There are different paths to choose from - of varying intensity and difficulty.

Bird Watching:- Pakshipathalam, located at an altitude of 1740 m above MSL, is an ideal spot to catch a glimpse of some of the exotic bird species indigenous to the Malabar area. The place is reachable only via trekking through dense forests. Special permission has to be procured from Forest Department to go to Pakshipathalam.

Ride on the Mighty:- Elephant safaris could be arranged inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in coordination with the Forest Department. This is the best way for spotting some wildlife.

Rafting:- Rafting could be enjoyed at the Kabani River.
Festivals
Thirunelli Festival:- Lying along the banks of the picturesque Papanasini River is the ancient temple of Thirunelli, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The 2 day annual festival of the temple is celebrated with much pomp and gaiety in the month of April during the Vishu season. This marvel in stone is set in the most dramatic of settings – perched on a hillock in the midst of lush jungles with the scenic Papanasini quietly flowing by its side. The shrine is surrounded by 30 carved granite columns. According to Hindu mythology, the holy waters of Papanasini has the potency to absolve one of all sins.

Location
Vythiri is located in the district of Wayanad, in Northern Kerala, covering an area of 150 sq km.

Climate
Vythiri enjoys a cool temperate climate throughout the year with temperatures dipping as low as 15 °C during Dec-Jan.

Best Time To Visit
Traditionally, tourist season in the state is at its peak during the September-March period. The concept, however, has undergone a change with the concept of ‘Monsoon Tourism’ gaining wide popularity in the recent times. The rainy season from May-September is considered an ideal time to enjoy rejuvenating Ayurveda treatment.

Savor some of the most lip smacking cuisines prepared in typical Northern Kerala style. Don’t forget to try Kappa (Tapioca) and Meen curry (Fish Curry). Most of the local cuisines are prepared with fresh spices and herbs; a delightful change from the food in the plains.

Pakshipathalam near Vythiri is rich with a variety of rare birds including - the emerald dove, the paradise fly catcher, the Asian fairy blue bird and the gold fronted chloropsis.
